In the exhibition "Colleagues Wanted I - Superheroines and visionary associates for everyday challenges" at alpha nova galerie futura the group "Maternal Fantasies" presents the photo text installation "Like so many..." which was created during a short residence at betOnest in Stolpe/Brandenburg in June 2018.

Inspired by the feminist polemics of the second women's movement, the autobiographical text fragments emerged in direct response to the artists’ internal confrontation with the themes of maternity, identity, and representation

Using passages from Adrienne Rich's essay "Anger and Tenderness" as creative prompts, the artists collectively engaged in automatic writing exercises and staged a series of photographic and moving images, in which they and their own children are both actors and producers.

Maternal Fantasies "Landpartie 01"

As part of the first Maternal Fantasies "Landpartie", the site of the former cement factory becomes a temporary location for filming and action - a rehearsal stage for the group’s first artistic collaboration. A set of rules defined in advance by the collective inspires and structures the artistic working process, involving a varying number of group members and children. The scenes, reminiscent of ‘Tableaux Vivants’, are staged by alternating directors with an ensemble of their choice in various locations on the vast terrain. The positioning of the protagonists and the staging of a scene oscillates between art historical references from classical paintings to playful improvisations by the mother-child ensemble. Props made with the children - phallic body extensions and concealing masks - are intuitively included, interpreted and modified. The children's "Freeze Game", similar to stop dancing, becomes an artistic method, a photographic and cinematographic strategy. Maternal Fantasies "Landpartie 01" reflects artistic production as collective practice and experience and counters traditional models with contemporary, processual alternatives developed through practical work.

Maternal Fantasies @ alpha nova galerie futura

In der Ausstellung “Colleagues Wanted I - Superheroins and visionary associates for everyday challenges” präsentiert die Gruppe “Maternal Fantasies” die Foto-Text-Installation “Like so many...” , die im Rahmen einer Kurz-Residenz im betOnest in Stolpe/Brandenburg im Juni 2018 entstand.

Ausgangspunkt der Foto-Text-Installation ist eine kollektive creative writing Session, sowie eine Serie inszenierter, fotografischer und bewegter Bilder.

Die einzelnen Textsegmente der Wandinstallation setzen sich aus Fragmenten autobiographisch gefärbter Texte zusammen, die in direkter Resonanz auf unsere gruppeninterne Auseinandersetzung mit dem Themenfeld Mutterschaft, Identität und Repräsentation, sowie unserer Beschäftigung mit Essays und feministischen Streitschriften der zweiten Frauenbewegung, besonders Adrienne Rich’s Essay “Anger and Tenderness” hervorgegangen sind.

Maternal Fantasies “Landpartie 01”

Im Rahmen der ersten Maternal Fantasies “Landpartie” wird das Gelände der ehemaligen Zementfabrik zum temporären Dreh- und Handlungsort der Gruppe - zur Probebühne für eine erste künstlerische Zusammenarbeit. Ein vom Kollektiv vorab definiertes Regelwerk inspiriert und strukturiert den künstlerischen Arbeitsprozess der folgenden Tage unter Einbeziehung einer variierenden Anzahl von Gruppenmitgliedern und Kindern. Die an Tableaux Vivants erinnernden Szenen werden von wechselnden Regisseurinnen mit einem Ensemble ihrer Wahl an verschiedenen Schauplätzen des weitläufigen Geländes inszeniert. Die Positionierung der Protagonist*innen und Wahl einer Szene oszilliert zwischen kunsthistorischen Referenzpunkten aus dem Bereich der Malerei einerseits und spielerischen Improvisationen des mütterlich-kindlichen Gruppengefüges. Zuvor angefertigte Requisiten - phallische Körpererweiterungen und verdeckende Masken - werden intuitiv einbezogen, interpretiert und modifiziert.  – Das dem Stop-Tanz ähnliche “Freeze Game” der Kinder wird zur künstlerischen Methode, zur fotografischen und kinematografischen Strategie. Maternal Fantasies “Landpartie 01” spiegelt künstlerische Produktion als kollektive Praxis und Erfahrung und zielt darauf ab, überkommenen Rollenbildern zeitgenössische, prozesshafte, durch die praktische Arbeit entwickelte Alternativen entgegenzusetzen und zur Diskussion zu stellen.

“Superheroines — what makes them? How do characters, desires, and ideas change depending on the socio-political context of their creators? How do superheroines become role models in a world shaped by inequality?

In the group exhibition “Colleagues Wanted I - Superheroines and visionary associates” at alpha nova galerie futura berlin, the artist group Maternal Fantasies presents a photo-text installation whose starting point is a collective writing session, as well as a series of staged photographic and moving images. The texts are composed of fragments of autobiographical-tinged writing that have arisen from grappling with motherhood, identity and representation, as well as with second wave feminist polemical pamphlets. The visual components recall tableaux vivants that are staged with varying numbers of group members and children. Artistic production appears here as collective experience.
